Working with the DOD and its supply chain, XSB, Inc. has developed a linked data model for parts in the Defense and Aerospace industrial supply chain. This model is created using open W3C Semantic Web standards and is driven by an ontology model to represent physical and logistics properties of parts and the specifications and standards that control them. It is based on our PartLink part model and Semantic Web for Interoperable Specifications and Standards (SWISS) model for controlling documents.

Our presentation will:

  • Examine the combined ontology used to represent the semantic concepts associated to parts and the materials and processes required to manufacture them and the syntactic structure for specifications that inform these semantic concepts
  • Present the RDF model used to represent this ontology
  • Discuss the API we developed to build web applications using the RDF model
  • Illustrate some sample applications developed using the API

Dr. L. Robert Pokorny has worked for XSB, Inc. since its founding in 1998. He is XSB’s Software Engineering Manager, leading development on projects focused on data extraction, classification and standardization. He managed the DOD PartLink project which was funded under the DOD Rapid Innovation Fund Program. Partlink converted much of the Federal Cataloging System’s product schema into an OWL ontology maintained in RDF. He has also served as Program Manager for XSB on many short term projects focusing on tools and processes to help DLA improve delivery of parts and services to their customers. Dr. Pokorny received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stony Brook University in 2005; he also holds an MS in Computer Science from Stony Brook University (1997), as well as an MS and BS in Mechanical Engineering from MIT (1970). Dr. Pokorny holds four patents and published numerous technical papers on data quality.

Dr. David Winchell is a Senior Programmer at XSB, Inc. He is the technical lead on the XSB and DLA funded Semantic Web for Interoperable Specs and Standards (SWISS) project. SWISS transformed specification documents from Government and Industry into an interoperable semantic web linked data model. He is also the technical lead on the CDUM (Customer Driven Uniform Manufacture) project funded by DLA. This project has resulted in the development of TexSpecs, a semi-automated system designed to convert a set of government purchase descriptions, commercial item descriptions, and specifications into digital models. Dr. Winchell received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1990, and has held research positions at Oak Ridge National Lab and the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining XSB in 2007, Dr. Winchell worked at the National Nuclear Data Center at Brookhaven National Lab.
